There’s always something happening at Hôtel Amour. Fashion people, artists and creatives meet for lunch, catch up over coffee or work during the day. The outfits are worth a look, and conversations tend to run long. It’s the kind of place where you come downstairs for a coffee and end up staying.

On rue de Navarin in Pigalle, the hotel was created by André Saraiva with Thierry Costes. André is a dear friend and someone who has helped shape the way art, nightlife and people come together in Paris. Amour carries plenty of his personality: relaxed, playful and with a distinctive eye for detail.

What I love most is that it feels lived in. The graffiti in the lift, the furniture and the mix of objects give it the character of a place that has hosted plenty of interesting people. To me, it still carries something of the Le Baron era, when fashion, music and art came together around the same table. That energy is still there, even in daylight.

This time, Pat and I stayed for a night and took these photographs. Our room had incredible light. Tall windows, pink curtains, yellow and soft green walls, wooden furniture and books on the shelves. A mix of vintage charm and Art Deco touches that works beautifully. The marble bathroom was another favourite spot to photograph.

The smaller details give the place its identity: the Amour neon sign seen from the window, the illustrated stationery, the little “Do not disturb” tag. Even the simplest objects feel thoughtfully chosen.

The restaurant is worth visiting even if you’re not staying. The menu is rooted in French bistro cooking, and our meal was delicious, fresh and light, with flavours that reminded us of the Mediterranean. It also has the kind of atmosphere that can easily turn lunch into an entire afternoon.

Between the neighbourhood, the crowd and the style of the place, Amour remains an address we love coming back to. And if you get a room with that light, bring a camera.

Our stay was hosted by Hôtel Amour.

Checking in: Hôtel Amour, Paris
