Nane Miller es hija de la ex Miss Costa Rica, donde nació pero luego vivió seis años en Quito. Pronto llegó Nueva York donde estudió y sacó un ‘major’ en Media, Culture and Communications y un ‘minor’ en Business of Entertainment and Technology en la New York University. Actualmente vive entre la capital mexicana y Miami. Su fuerte vínculo con la moda y los outfits, el mundo de infuencers y redes sociales, y la importancia de contar con una voz propia, personal, son las claves de este encuentro con REGIA.
Nane Miller is the daughter of a former Miss Costa Rica, where she was born, but later lived for six years in Quito. She soon made her way to New York, where she studied and earned a ‘majored’ in Media, Culture, and Communications, and a ‘minored’ in Business of Entertainment and Technology at New York University. Currently, she splits her time between Mexico City and Miami. Her strong connection with fashion and outfits, the world of influencers and social media, and the importance of having her own, personal voice are the key points of this interview with REGIA.
¿Cómo fue interesarse por la moda al crecer entre Costa Rica y Quito?
Mi mamá fue Miss Costa Rica y pasó años modelando en Europa y Japón. Crecí con sus maravillosas historias, y encontré el mismo afán por la moda que ella. Empecé a actuar y modelar desde que era niña, salía en novelas, programas de cocina, comerciales… me encantaba y asombraba la producción de los mismos. Cuando me mudé a Quito desde Costa Rica, encontré en la moda un espacio para conocerme mejor. Comencé a desarrollar mi manera de expresarme y también me mantuvo muy conectada conmigo misma; pensaba mucho en mi esencia porque me estaba moviendo mucho de países físicamente.
¿Te sentís parte de la nueva generación digital, qué significa ser una creadora de contenido en 2023?
Creo que lo maravilloso de esta nueva generación digital, es que la híper comunicación nos ha permitido a todos ser parte de y tener una voz. En el 2023 ser creadora de contenido tiene muchos significados, y verdaderamente lo que importa es el significado que uno mismo le quiera dar. No hay una sola manera de hacer las cosas, ni hay una sola manera de hacer contenido. Creo que lo más valioso es arraigarse a nuestra esencia y voz propia.
How did you become interested in fashion growing up between Costa Rica and Quito?
My mom was Miss Costa Rica and spent years modeling in Europe and Japan. I grew up with her wonderful stories, and I found the same passion for fashion as she had. I started acting and modeling as a child, appearing in soap operas, cooking shows, commercials… I loved it and was amazed by the production. When I moved to Quito from Costa Rica, I found in fashion a space to get to know myself better. I began to develop my way of expressing myself, and it also kept me very connected with myself; I thought a lot about my essence because I was physically moving a lot between countries.
Do you feel part of the new digital generation, what does it means to be a content creator in 2023?
I think the wonderful thing about this new digital generation is that hyper-communication has allowed all of us to be part of and have a voice. In 2023, being a content creator has many meanings, and what truly matters is the meaning you want to give it. There is not a single way to do things or to create content. I believe that the most valuable thing is to stay true to our essence and our own voice.
Cuando trabajas para una marca, ¿qué es lo más importante, saber trabajar en equipo, crear una comunidad fuerte?
Creo que lo primero al trabajar con una marca es preguntarte si está alineada con tu marca personal, o con lo que te motiva. Me gusta trabajar con marcas que se sientan orgánicas, y también que me permitan ser yo misma en la creación del contenido. Lo más importante siempre es la comunicación.
¿Todavía es posible que la fama te impresione o te conmueve más la resiliencia?
Me parecen valiosas las voces propias y las personas que no se dejan llevar por lo que creen que es esperado de ellos. Aprecio la resiliencia y reconozco que es algo que hay que ejercitar. Creo que es importante notar que aunque sea un mundo digital, somos personas primero en el plano físico.
Más allá de las redes sociales, ¿qué te inspira?
Me inspiran las ciudades, y el ritmo particular de cada una, en el día a día. Encuentro mucha inspiración en museos y galerías, al igual que en la música. En este momento me gusta mucho ver los videos musicales, específicamente estoy teniendo un momento especial con los de No Doubt. Me gusta estar empapada de lo que esté pasando en cualquier ámbito creativo y no me limito a buscar inspiración solamente en moda. De hecho creo que la creatividad es una mezcla entre la conexión con uno mismo, y dejarse sentir con nuestros alrededores. Ahora estás radicada en EE.UU.
When you work for a brand, what is more important, knowing how to work in a team or building a strong community?
I believe that the first thing when working with a brand is to ask yourself if it aligns with your personal brand or what motivates you. I like to work with brands that feel organic and also allow me to be myself in creating content. Communication is always the most important.
Is fame still something that impresses you, or are you more moved by resilience?
I find personal voices and people who don’t succumb to what is expected of them valuable. I appreciate resilience and recognize that it is something that needs to be exercised. I believe it is important to note that even though it’s a digital world, we are first and foremost physical beings.
Beyond social media, what inspires you?
I am inspired by cities and their unique rhythms in daily life. I find a lot of inspiration in museums and galleries, as well as in music. At the moment, I really enjoy watching music videos, particularly having a special moment with No Doubt’s videos. I like to be immersed in what’s happening in any creative field, and I don’t limit myself to seeking inspiration only in fashion. In fact, I believe that creativity is a blend of connecting with oneself and being attuned to our surroundings.
¿Cómo acabaste en Miami?
Mi papá es americano, y Miami siempre fue el lugar de encuentro para mis hermanos y yo. Siempre había querido vivir en Miami porque se siente muy familiar. La oportunidad se me dio, y estoy feliz de poder vivir ahí en este momento.
Hoy en día, la mayoría de las personas comparten una versión idealizada de sus vidas en línea a través de las redes. ¿Haces eso también con tu blog, tomas distancia entre tu vida laboral y tu vida privada?
Desde que abrí mi vida a redes sociales, me ha parecido importante ser transparente acerca de mi vida personal. Comparto muchos detalles, y comparto temas que yo quisiera que alguien hablara también. He discutido temas personales como mi divorcio, temas médicos como en mi proceso de fertilidad y he abierto la puerta a mi vida amorosa. Ha sido de las cosas más gratificantes abrir esa puerta a mi vida porque he tenido conversaciones muy valiosas con personas que están pasando por experiencias similares, me ha ayudado también a expandir mis percepciones y pude crecer a raíz de compartir. Sin embargo, intento compartir desde un lugar donde yo esté cómoda, y no siempre comparto en “tiempo real”.
You are currently based in the USA. How did you end up in Miami?
My dad is American, and Miami has always been a meeting place for my siblings and me. I had always wanted to live in Miami because it feels very familiar. The opportunity presented itself, and I am happy to be living there at this moment.
Nowadays, most people share an idealized version of their lives online through social media. Do you also do that with your blog, or do you maintain a distance between your work life and your private life?
Since I opened my life to social media, I have found it important to be transparent about my personal life. I share many details and discuss topics that I wish someone else would talk about too. I have talked about personal topics like my divorce, medical issues like my fertility journey, and I have opened the door to my love life. It has been one of the most rewarding things to open that door to my life because I have had very valuable conversations with people going through similar experiences. It has also helped me expand my perspectives and grow through sharing. However, I try to share from a place where I am comfortable, and I don’t always share in “real-time.”
