The Queer Arab Glossary is the first published collection of Arabic LGBTQ+ slang edited by multidisciplinary artist and designer Marwan Kaabour It is a powerful response to pervasive myths and tropes around sexuality, capturing the lexicon of the queer Arab community in all its differences, quirks and felicities. Featuring fascinating facts and anecdotes, it contains more than 300 terms in both English and Arabic, ranging from the humorous to the harrowing, serious to tongue-in-cheek, pejorative to endearing. The project, that aims to combat stereotypes and clichés, bringing people and cultures together instead of creating further divisions.

Originally from Beirut, Marwan moved to London in 2011 to pursue a master's in Graphic Design from the London College of Communication, before joining renowned design agency Barnbrook). In 2020 he establishes his own studio. He’s the founder of Takweer, an online platform and archive of queer narratives in Arab history and popular culture. He has worked with leading cultural institutions, including the V&A Museum, Art Basel, The National Gallery, Serpentine Galleries and the Zaha Hadid Foundation He designed the much-celebrated Rihanna book, a Time magazine Best Photo Book of 2019.

What inspired you to create The Queer Arab Glossary?
I’ve always been curious about how words are constructed, their etymology, and their socio-political context. I’m also a diligent collector. Since I was a child, I’ve been obsessed with collecting, organising, and categorising. The collections varied over time, but the method was always the same. That same methodology made its way into the book. Takweer, the platform which I founded in 2019, aims to explore, archive, and celebrate queer narratives in Arab history and pop culture. The platform is followed by a broad and diverse audience from all across the Arabic-speaking region and beyond. During my many conversations with the platform’s followers I would come across queer Arabic slang which I wouldn’t be familiar with, so I wanted to learn more. It was in the early days of the first lockdown in 2020 that the glossary was born. I asked Takweer’s followers to submit queer slang they knew, and to specify it’s meaning and context. Little did I know, that was the beginning of a 4-year long journey that ended with a thoroughly-researched glossary of over 300 terms.

Siempre he tenido curiosidad por cómo se construyen las palabras, su etimología y su contexto sociopolítico. También soy un coleccionista diligente. Desde que era niño, he estado obsesionado con coleccionar, organizar y categorizar. Las colecciones variaron con el tiempo, pero el método siempre fue el mismo. Esa misma metodología se trasladó al libro. Takweer, la plataforma que fundé en 2019, tiene como objetivo explorar, archivar y celebrar narrativas queer en la historia y cultura popular árabe. La plataforma es seguida por una audiencia amplia y diversa de toda la región de habla árabe y más allá. Durante mis muchas conversaciones con los seguidores de la plataforma, me encontraba con jerga queer árabe que no conocía, así que quería aprender más. Fue en los primeros días del primer confinamiento en 2020 que nació el glosario. Pedí a los seguidores de Takweer que enviaran jerga queer que conocían y especificaran su significado y contexto. What are the key messages in The Queer Arab Glossary?
Queer people, and their slang have existed as long as the Arabic language has. Queer Arab slang is poetic, hilarious, and imaginative. Slang is one of the ways we build a better understanding of a community, and particularly a marginalised community. By looking at the terminology, metaphor and symbolism used, we can understand how this community is perceived by the rest of the society, as well as how it sees itself. The Queer Arab Glossary is a space for our community to come together and explore our shared histories.

Las personas queer y su jerga han existido tanto como el idioma árabe. La jerga queer árabe es poética, hilarante e imaginativa. La jerga es una de las formas en que construimos una mejor comprensión de una comunidad, y particularmente de una comunidad marginada. Al observar la terminología, las metáforas y el simbolismo utilizado, podemos entender cómo esta comunidad es percibida por el resto de la sociedad, así como cómo se ve a sí misma. The Queer Arab Glossary is unique in its form, content and style. Where did you draw inspiration from?
I don’t think there’s any other book that compares to the form and content of The Queer Arab Glossary. I think there are a handful of books on queer slang in English, and plenty of books on queer culture in general, but The Queer Arab Glossary is the first book to blend these elements together. With the illustrations, we took inspiration from Arab illustration titans Mohieddin El-Labbad and Helmi El-Touni for the illustrated entries.
