The 74th Berlinale opened with the poignant and delicate Small Things Like These, led by the remarkable and enigmatic Cillian Murphy. This marked the world premiere of an Irish tale shedding light on the Catholic Church's abuse of young girls, a hauntingly dark chapter from not so long ago. It was undoubtedly one of my top picks of the festival.
Switching gears to something entirely different, I also thoroughly enjoyed Love, Lies, Bleeding, a queer story starring the magnetic Kristen Stewart. Once again, I was fortunate to bask in her brilliance—last year, she graced the Berlinale as part of the jury, and honestly, I’ll never tire of her. She’s a force.
Another standout for me was Cuckoo. As a huge fan of horror movies, and Hunter Schafer, it was everything I hoped for and more. I’m thrilled to see her taking on more film roles, and I feel privileged to say I may have had a small hand in shaping her future title. After all, I was the first to ask her if she sees herself as the next “Scream Queen.” Perhaps I’m reaching, but I’m very proud of that exchange. Here’s hoping my prediction comes true!

The iconic Martin Scorsese attended this year’s Berlinale in order to receive the prestigious Golden Bear. And guess what? I somehow managed to ask him a question. Out of the hundreds of reporters at his press conference, I didn’t think I’d actually get picked, but my blind confidence insisted I prepare something anyway. And thank goodness I did.
When my turn came, I confidently asked, “Apart from her (his mother) famous sauce, what was your favorite dish your mom made while you were growing up?” In true Italian fashion, Martin lit up and told me her lasagna was his favorite. He made sure to add that while all lasagna is good, his mother’s was the best. Classic.
If you’re not familiar, Martin’s mom was quite a character in her own right. I highly recommend checking out Italianamerican, a film he made decades ago where he interviews his parents. It’s such a charming glimpse into a typical New York Italian family, heartwarming and entertaining.

La 74ª Berlinale empezó su semana con Small Things Like These, protagonizada por el notable y enigmático Cillian Murphy. Esta fue la premiere mundial de una emotiva historia irlandesa que expone los abusos de la Iglesia Católica hacia niñas jóvenes, un capítulo oscuro y relativamente reciente de su historia. Sin dudarlo puedo afirmar que fue una de mis favoritas del festival.
En otro tono completamente diferente quiero compartirles que también disfruté muchísimo de Love, Lies, Bleeding, una historia queer protagonizada por el amor de mi vida, Kristen Stewart. No es la primera vez que puedo disfrutar de su talento (y belleza) ya que el año pasado participó de la Berlinale como parte del jurado, y la verdad que nunca deja de sorprenderme.
Otro gran momento que quiero destacar del festival para mí fue Cuckoo. Como fanática del cine de terror, y de Hunter Schafer, la película cumplió y superó todas mis expectativas. Me encanta verla tomando más papeles en la gran pantalla, y me siento un poco orgullosa de haber tenido quizás una pequeña influencia en su, quizás, futuro título. Después de todo, fui la primera en preguntarle si se veía como la próxima Scream Queen. Quizás estoy exagerando, pero ese intercambio con Hunter me dejó muy contenta. Ojalá mi predicción se haga realidad y termine actuando en muchísimas más películas de terror.
El genio indiscutido de Martin Scorsese asistió este año a la Berlinale para recibir el prestigioso Oso de Oro. Y adivinen qué? Desconozco cómo, pero logré hacerle una pregunta. Entre cientos de periodistas que estaban en la conferencia de prensa desesperados por hablarles a Scorsese, nunca imaginé que me elegirían, pero igual me animé a preparar una pregunta por si acaso. Menos mal que lo hice.
Cuando llegó mi turno, le pregunté con una falsa seguridad: “Además de su famosa salsa, ¿cuál era tu plato favorito que hacía tu mamá cuando eras chico?” Fiel a su estilo italiano, Martin se iluminó y me respondió que la lasaña de su madre era su preferida. Se aseguró de aclarar que, aunque toda lasaña es buena, la de su madre era la mejor.
Si no la ubican, la mamá de Martin solía ser todo un personaje. Les recomiendo muchísimo ver Italianamerican, una película que hizo hace décadas donde entrevista a sus padres. Es un retrato muy tierno de una típica familia ítalo-americana de Nueva York: cálida, divertida y llena de historias (y comida)
Ya estoy contando los días en el calendario para la edición del año que viene. Muero de ganas de compartirles mis favoritos de esta próxima edición :)
